After months of increases, retail sales in August inched down 1% compared with August 2009, though year-to-date sales are still nearly 3% higher than last year.

Total taxable retail sales in August were $1.6 billion, a 0.9% drop from $1.62 billion the same month last year, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Auto and transportation sales fell 12.4%, and food store and building supply sales also saw decreases of 4.7% and 3.6%, respectively. Lodging sales, however, continued their strong summer showing, rising 7% in August. Business operating sales also jumped 13%.

Year to date, retail sales are 2.8% higher than the same period one year ago.
