SaviLinx launches employee scholarship program amid hiring spree

Brunswick-based call-service company SaviLinx LLC this week launched an employee scholarship program amid a hiring spree in both Maine and Mississippi.

Founder and CEO Heather Blease traveled to the firm's contact center in Hattiesburg, Miss., to present $2,000 to customer support representative Jequetta Dean, the first SaviScholar recipient, toward her tuition at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Heather Blease, left, founder and CEO of Brunswick-based SaviLinx LLC, presents a $2,000 scholarship to Mississippi-based employee Jequetta Dean.

"Earlier this year we took a fresh look at our charitable giving to make sure our donations match up with our guiding principles of inspiring innovation, supporting creativity and demonstrating integrity," Blease said in a prepared statement. "We decided the most meaningful way to live our guiding principles was to support our own employees.

Employees from the company's Maine and Mississippi locations submitted applications for funds to do everything from starting their own businesses to learning new schools.

Upon reviewing applications, a committee felt that Dean stood out because of her desire to set an example for her four sons, and promising her eldest that if he stayed in school and graduated that she would go back to college to finish her degree.

"I have to set an example to my sons to never give up on your dreams or yourself," Dean said. "It moves me that SaviLinx understood my passion and cared. To have an employer that encourages growth is such a blessing."

All nonseasonal SaviLinx employees in good standing are eligible to apply for SaviScholar funds. The company plans to announce dates for the next SaviScholars program this fall.

SaviLinx employs 145 people in Maine and is in the process of hiring 170 seasonal workers for an ongoing large contract to manage customer service calls for health care enrollment of government employees, a spokesperson told Mainebiz.

In Mississippi, SaviLinx employs just over 300 people and is hiring another 500 workers related to the same contract.

Several open positions are posted on the company's website.

SaviLinx, listed on the Inc. 5000 list of the country's fastest-growing private companies in 2017, 2018 and 2019, had 2018 revenues of $17 million. SaviLinx is also ranked the largest Maine woman-owned businesses in a Mainebiz list due to be published in the Sept. 2 print edition.
