Waterman’s Beach Lobster to close after 30 years

A James Beard Award-winning lobster shack in South Thomaston will close after three decades, it announced on its website.

Waterman’s Beach Lobster will serve its last headline-grabbing lobster roll on Sept. 4.

It won the Beard award in 2001 and a Boston Globe writer said in 2012 the “lobster in the rough” restaurant still lived up to its reputation.

Travel + Leisure named it to it “10 Best Lobster Shacks in Maine” list,” saying, “Between a meadow and a rocky beach sits Waterman’s humble shack, with two dozen picnic tables scattered around a lawn and a tented deck. The day’s haul is steamed over salt water, which gives the meat a briny tang while keeping it firm.”
