The town of Bethel and neighboring ski areas are in the midst of expanding and diversifying their economies. Various interests aim to leverage assets that have long made the area a desirable destination to outdoor enthusiasts. That includes proximity to New England population centers, location at the nexus of important corridors, Bethel’s reputation as an “authentic” New England town, and a longstanding vacation vibe for the region’s mountains, lakes and preserved lands.
Though it’s come a long way already, the redevelopment of Lewiston’s Bates Mill Complex is still a work in progress. Additional renovation work is taking place in the upper floors of Building 1, while the longer-term effort at Mill No. 5 continues with efforts to line up potential tenants.
Entosense, an edible insect startup in Lewiston, began farming crickets this past winter to eventually replace outsourcing. Owners plan to raise $1 million to $2 million this summer to pay for a 10,000- to 20,000-square-foot cricket farm.
