Calais continues to be the retail and service hub for eastern Washington County and much of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, expanding in the last few years. Despite its modest population of 3,123 residents, Calais serves a regional population of 15,000. This demographic advantage and strategic location positions Calais as an ideal destination for businesses looking to thrive in an interconnected market. To support businesses in establishing a presence in Calais, its economic development team, the Downeast Economic Development Corp. Calais experiences robust economic traffic with over 530,000 passenger cars crossing the Canadian/U.S. border in 2022 alone.
