After 30 years in one space, Maine Association of Nonprofits finds new home

Maine Association of Nonprofits leased 3,200 square feet of office space for its eight full-time employees at 30 Danforth St. in Portland.
The Maine Association of Nonprofits found a new home at 30 Danforth St. in Portland after a search that began in 2020.
“It’s particularly exciting to have our team be able to work in person together again, which we haven’t done since March of 2020,” said Jennifer Hutchins, MANP’s executive director. “The reality is that we will never return to in-person office work full-time, but it was important for us to have an inviting, well-kept space for our people when they do come to work.”

Founded in 1994, MANP is an advocate and resource for Maine nonprofits. It has more than 1,000 nonprofit members and 150 partners in government, business and philanthropy, representing every county in Maine and a full range of nonprofit missions and sizes.
The associated was headquartered at 565 Congress St. for nearly 30 years and had been looking for a new space since COVID hit.
“After being in the same space for nearly 30 years, we were in need of more updated space and amenities, including a conference room with video-conferencing capacity and a kitchen,” Hutchins told Mainebiz.
In January, it went fully remote, moving office equipment into a storage unit and various staff members’ garages with the goal of finding a new office space by summer.
The space at 30 Danforth ticked all the boxes, providing a mix of private and shared office space, conference space, staff parking and an elevator for ease of access.
“We’re excited for this new chapter,” said Hutchins. “We took our time in this search and were able to hone in on what mattered most to us in a workspace.”

The association took time with the property search to hone in on what mattered to it in a workspace.
Size was a consideration.
“We doubled our square footage that will allow for staff expansion in the future, and we are seeking a co-tenant for one to four individual work spaces,” she added.
The building totals 70,000 square feet. Owned by J.B. Brown & Sons in Portland, it dates back to 1905. The renovated brick warehouse has office suites and service retail spaces, with limited parking on an adjacent property, according to the landlord's website.
The location is walking distance to downtown and the Old Port area.

The space at 30 Danforth ticked all the boxes, including private and shared office space and conference space.
There were no significant renovations or alternations needed for move-in.
“We are taking our time transitioning into the space and are still seeking office furniture including desks, comfy chairs and conference table chairs,” she said. “Our other big focus is equipping our new conference room with video conferencing technology.”
The association has started to move in and staff will be occupying the space starting the early part of June.
