Great Falls Federal Credit Union plans to build a larger branch at its 760 Minot Ave. location in Auburn.

Demolition is expected to start in June, with a temporary credit union facility on site, the credit union said. Construction of the 4,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed in the spring of 2025.

The current location is 1,500 square feet.

The architect on the project is NES Group of Mansfield, Mass., which specializes in bank design and services. The general contractor will be Bowman Constructors of Newport.

The goal of the expansion is to allow the credit union to offer a wider range of financial services, expand member service capabilities and address in-person member needs.

The full-service branch will feature modern teller pods, state-of-the-art technology, coin machine, a member community room, a 24-hour ATM, two drive-up lanes and parking.

Community rooms are increasingly becoming popular across the country as credit unions aim to support their communities.

The 760 Minot Ave. community room will be available for members to use during and after hours. The room will serve as a versatile space for social gatherings, workshops and events.

“This milestone represents a significant opportunity for Great Falls Federal Credit Union to elevate our member service capabilities and serve the diverse needs of our valued members,” said Catherina Blais, Great Falls’ CEO.

Great Falls serves 5,000 members from its Lewiston, Monmouth and Auburn locations.

The construction project follows the 2022 merger of Great Falls and Monmouth Federal Credit Union. Both were founded in the early 1950s.

The merger combined Great Falls’ 3,300 members with Monmouth’s 2,200 members and resulted at that time in an organization with combined assets of approximately $60 million.

The goal of the merger was to offer better services, improved rates and new opportunities to members across Androscoggin County and parts of Kennebec County.

At the time of the merger, Blais said it would benefit members of both organizations.

“Smaller credit unions struggle with the increasing operational costs and competition of larger financial institutions,” she said.

“Our credit unions utilize many of the same vendors, so there will be immediate opportunities to reap the benefits of economies of scale. Employees will have more opportunity for professional growth as well.”
