BIW nets $66M contract modification

Bath Iron Works has received a $66 million contract modification for maintenance and modernization of the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, who's a member of the House Armed Services Committee.

The destroyers, also known as the DDG 51 class, have long been the shipyard's mainstay, though BIW has recently transitioned to building the DDG 1000 destroyers. The Navy initially planned to end the DDG 51 line, but decided to bring it back. In September 2011, BIW won a $680 million contract to build the next DDG 51 ship, and in February won a $663 million contract to build another.

The contract announced today is to provide design, planning and material support services for both maintenance and modernization for the destroyers.
