Bids for ferry service to Yarmouth fail
A commission in Nova Scotia dismissed five proposals to re-establish ferry service between Yarmouth and New England for lack of adequate financing.
The Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission, which studied the proposals for two months, released a report concluding none were financially viable, reported the Bar Harbor Times. In its report, the commission said it hopes to re-establish a New England connection by the spring of 2012. Yarmouth and Portland are both investing millions in new terminal projects.
According to Bay Ferries Limited, which suspended The Cat high-speed ferry service between Maine and Nova Scotia this year, the rising Canadian dollar, poor U.S. economy and new American passport regulations contributed to the expense of their operation, the paper reported. In October, an investment group scrapped its plans to operate a ferry between Halifax and Portland because it was too late in the season to attract riders in 2011, but a spokesman for the group said it hopes to establish service in 2012.
