Ex-bookkeeper pleads guilty to theft

A former bookkeeper for Augusta Orthodontics has pleaded guilty to stealing about $120,000 from the practice over a six-year span.

Celine Davis of Lewiston will be sentenced on the theft conviction in December, according to the Kennebec Journal. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Davis will receive a sentence of five years in jail, with all but six months suspended if she pays back around $70,000 of the stolen money between now and December. Otherwise, she faces nine months in jail. Davis worked at Augusta Orthodontics for 16 years and was fired in February, after her embezzlement was uncovered when a customer complained about errors on a bill.

It's the second court decision involving theft from an orthodontist's office this year. In May, Sandra Wallace, an office manager at a Rockland center, was sentenced to a year and a day in prison after being convicted of stealing more than $64,000 from the business.
