Mayo Reg. Hospital CEO to retire

Ralph Gabarro, the president and CEO of Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, will retire next October.

Gabarro has served as leader of the Piscataquis County hospital since 1997, and cited turning 65 next year as his reason to step down, according to the Bangor Daily News. During his tenure, the hospital became the largest employer in the county and now has nearly 400 full-time-equivalent positions and an annual budget of $45 million. The State Employee Health Commission also ranked it one of the state’s top five hospitals, and it’s also been named one of the top 100 critical access hospitals in the country.

The hospital’s board of directors has already begun a search to find Gabarro’s replacement, whom it hopes to have in place before he retires on Oct. 31, 2012.
