Pellet producers seek USDA support

Maine wood pellet producers yesterday urged federal representatives to do more to support their alternative heating source, arguing ethanol and other liquid fuel producers are given preferential treatment when it comes to federal subsidies.

Dallas Tonsager, undersecretary for U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, visited Corinth Wood Pellets and also met with two other pellet company owners and the president of the Maine Pellet Fuels Association, according to the Bangor Daily News. Tonsager said he came to Maine to learn more about the industry and whether it should be supported as a viable alternative to other heat sources. The pellet company owners said the industry isn’t growing as fast as they hoped, which could be in part because the federal government doesn’t give it enough support, choosing instead to subsidize other fuel producers.

George Soffron, president and CEO of Corinth Wood Pellets, told the paper that the USDA should provide incentives to make converting from another fuel to wood pellets easier and cheaper for homeowners and businesses.
