Portland podiatrist indicted on drug charges

A former Portland doctor has been indicted on 45 charges related to drug and health care fraud. Podiatrist John Perry, who ran Atlantic Foot & Ankle Center in Portland, allegedly wrote illegal prescriptions.

A federal grand jury yesterday indicted Perry on charges of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, health care fraud and 43 counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, according to the Portland Press Herald. Perry, under investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration since 2010, allegedly traded prescriptions for cash and cocaine, and falsifying patient charts to hide the illegal prescriptions. He closed his practice last year.

The majority of the charges carry maximum sentences of up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
