Portland earns high marks on magazine lists

Portland has received some national and regional accolades as of late. The city was named the fifth hippest city in the United States by Travel & Leisure magazine, and Providence, R.I.-based GoLocal named it the fifth best city in New England.

Portland was the highest-ranked East Coast city on Travel & Leisure's list, according to a press release from city officials. The magazine cited the city's coffee shops, microbrews and restaurant scene as magnets for hipsters, and gave high marks to the city's independent boutiques, live music scene, eco-consciousness and "offbeat and tech-savvy locals." The ranking is based on a survey of magazine readers, who ranked 35 metro areas.

GoLocal, an online magazine, praised Portland for its quality of life, economic prosperity and environment. It used 16 criteria, including income, unemployment rates and crime statistics, to rank the five most populous cities in the six New England states.
