Calais nursing home closes ahead of schedule
A Calais nursing home originally slated to close July 6 shut its doors early, on June 21, after all its residents were able to find new arrangements. A total of 92 people lost their jobs as a result of the Atlantic Rehabilitation and Nursing Center's closure.
Earlier this month, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services affirmed First Atlantic Healthcare's plan to close the 52-bed facility and open a new one in Ellsworth. At that time, the nursing home had 18 residents remaining, all of whom were able to relocate to new facilities by June 21, according to the Bangor Daily News. Officials with the city and Teamsters Local 340 fought the center's closure, arguing it should remain open because it was the only licensed nursing home in Calais. The union represented about half of the laid-off workers.
First Atlantic Healthcare last fall submitted the certificate of need to close the Calais center due to dwindling revenues.
