Another cruise line to buy Maine lobsters

Celebrity Cruises has agreed to buy approximately 3,800 pounds of Maine lobster when the cruise ship Celebrity Summit visits Portland and Bar Harbor in September and October.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree made the announcement in a press release,  after urging cruise ship CEOs to buy Maine lobster earlier this month in a letter writing campaign. Pingree said her office got word this week that the Celebrity Cruises liked her suggestion and the Summit Celebrity, which carries more than 2,000 passengers, will purchase lobster during two visits to Portland next month and a stop in Bar Harbor in October, according to the release.

Pingree said she has also heard from at least one other major cruise ship company about buying Maine lobsters. In early August, a cruise ship operated by Holland America Lines purchased a ton of lobster for its passengers when it arrived in Bar Harbor. That deal was orchestrated by Bar Harbor town officials, a state senator, the local chamber of commerce, Cruise Maine and the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound.
