State 'C-SPAN' OK'd; Capitol News Service closes

State officials have approved a six-month pilot for a new public broadcasting channel dedicated to coverage of the State House.

The new MPBN project will be modeled after the national Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, or C-SPAN, according to the Kennebec Journal.

To run the channel, MPBN will bring in State House veteran Mal Leary, who has covered Augusta for more than 30 years. Leary currently runs Capitol News Service, a wire service that provides State House coverage to Maine newspapers, which he plans to close.

The service will use existing closed-circuit television feeds to broadcast sessions in the House and Senate and will broadcast on one of MPBN's digital channels.

Station officials told the Legislature that the channel could go live as early as February.
