Starbucks is planning to open its third Old Port coffee shop in mid-April, at 145 Commercial St.

The national coffee retailer leased the 2,031-square-foot space early this year in the Evie Cianchette block, where Merrill Lynch and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care are leasing space, according to brokers at NAI The Dunham Group.

Preliminary work was under way Tuesday afternoon by crews from Landry/French Construction.

The Associated Press reported in December that Starbucks plans to open at least 1,500 cafes in the U.S. in 2013.

According to Dunham's Marketing Director Marina Turmelle, the chain plans to keep its Middle and Congress street locations open, which will bring its downtown total to match that of the locally owned coffee chain Coffee By Design, which has two locations on the East End and one on Congress Street.
