Maine unemployment rate little changed in June at 2.9%
Maine’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.9% in June, up slightly from 2.8% in May but down from 3.5% a year earlier, according to preliminary data released July 20 by the Maine Department of Labor.
That means that Maine’s unemployment rate has been below 4.0% for 31 consecutive months, the longest period on record.
Compared to last year, the number of unemployed declined by 3,900 to 20,400 in June.
Across New England, the average seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 3.6%, with New Hampshire at 2.7%, Vermont at 2.8%, Massachusetts at 3.5%, Rhode Island at 4.3% and Connecticut at 4.4%.
The U.S. preliminary unemployment rate of 4.0% for June was up a notch from 3.8% in May and down from 4.35% a year ago.
Within Maine, the Department of Labor also gave a breakdown of preliminary estimates of not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates by county: Unemployment was lowest in Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties at 2.7%, and highest in Aroostook County at 4.7%.
For the month of June, unemployment rates were the lowest on record in Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Piscataquis and Washington counties. In the other 11 counties, rates were the lowest in 18 to 20 years.
