House opposes single-casino question

A proposed expansion of games at Hollywood Slots and a Washington County casino have stayed alive as competing measures to the Oxford casino proposal.

The House voted 81-69 against putting only the citizen's initiative for an Oxford casino on the ballot, opening up the possibility that the two other measures could also appear as well, according to Capitol News Service. Black Bear Entertainment has proposed and submitted a petition for a four-season casino in Oxford, Hollywood Slots has proposed adding table games to its facility in Bangor and the Passamaquoddy Tribe has proposed a casino in Washington County. The House decision goes against the Legislature's Legal and Veteran Affairs vote last month that nixed putting all three gaming proposals into a single ballot question and instead recommended putting only the Oxford casino to voters.

Though the Oxford proposal is the sole initiative to collect signatures, the state constitution allows the Legislature to put competing measures to the voters as well. The Senate must still consider the measure, according to the news service.
