CBD awards fund marketing efforts

Coffee By Design is looking to boost the profile of its 15-year-old charitable fund and this year's fund recipients in a new promotional video.

Out of $5,700 awarded this year by the Portland-based coffee chain, $1,200 is being earmarked to hire a videographer to create a DVD highlighting each fund recipient that they and CBD can use for marketing and branding purposes.

Mary Allen Lindemann, CBD co-owner, says the chain's annual Rebel Blend fund — generated from sales of its namesake coffee — has most often gone to support specific art-related projects. But this year, the employee committee that selects recipients saw a need for marketing - for both the CBD fund and its recipients.

"I haven't wanted to use what we do as marketing, but people say that's a part of why they support us," Lindemann says.

Lindemann says the award recipients -- The Telling Room, the Lewiston-Auburn Film Festival and Yes Art Works/Creative Work Systems -- will have access to their individual videos to use for marketing; a video combining the stories of the three recipients will be made for CBD to further promote its charitable work. Additionally, the three organizations will each receive a $1,500 grant.

Lindemann says the charitable fund provides an important connection to the community since the fund was founded during CBD's third year of business.

Heather Davis, executive director of The Telling Room, a Portland-based nonprofit promoting storytelling and literacy, says the fund has helped to distinguish CBD as "such a force for good in this community."

In 15 years, the fund has contributed over $50,000 to area arts organizations.
