Summit begins natural gas pipeline construction

Summit Natural Gas of Maine has started building a $350 million natural gas pipeline, joining competing Maine Natural Gas in constructing natural gas infrastructure in the Kennebec Valley.

The company announced in a press release that it began work this week on a $110 million portion of that project through deals with three construction firms, CCB Inc. of Westbrook, Tetra Tech of Pasadena, Calif., and Schmid Pipeline Construction Inc. of Mayville, Wis.

The Kennebec Journal reported that competing Maine Natural Gas, owned by Iberdrola, has completed about four miles, or 40%, of its natural gas project into Augusta.

That project is scheduled to tap into the Maritimes and Northeast pipeline later this month, the paper reported.
