J.D. Irving to invest $30 million in Aroostook sawmill

J.D. Irving Ltd., a privately owned conglomerate headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick, said its sawmills division will invest $30 million in a new softwood sawmill in the Aroostook County town of Ashland.

During construction, the new facility will employ up to 50 people at peak, the company stated in a press release on Monday announcing the investment. Once the mill is operating, 60 permanent jobs will be created.

Biomass boilers, dry kilns and a planer mill are part of the investment. The new mill is expected to open in late spring 2014.

The company said the sawmill would produce lumber that could be environmentally certified under the Forest Stewardship Council or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative programs. Most of the lumber is to be sold to major retail lumber yards on the U.S. eastern seaboard.

The round-wood log supply for the new sawmill will be procured from the company's Maine freehold woodlands as well as other woodlot and timberland owners in the state, the company said, adding that it has reached an agreement with the United Steel Workers Union to certify the sawmill site.
