Lincoln mill waits on boiler repair, prolonging furloughs
Officials at Lincoln Paper and Tissue have decided to wait until market conditions improve before repairing the recovery boiler that exploded Nov. 2, idling two of the mill's paper-making machines and causing the impending furlough of up to 200 workers.
Mill CEO Keith Van Scotter told the Bangor Daily News that the mill would focus on its tissue-making operation while deciding what to do about the boiler. Mill management initially announced they would repair the boiler as soon as they could.
Workers were notified of the impending layoffs earlier this week. Union officials told the newspaper that it typically takes eight to nine months to rebuild a recovery boiler, and that workers are looking at an extended layoff.
The BDN reported the mill's three tissue-making machines are running at full capacity and will continue to do so, according to Van Scotter. The mill, which employs 400, makes stock for business cards and envelopes. The tissue-making division makes party goods and products for medical uses.
