LePage sends layoff notices to 58 state workers

Gov. Paul LePage issued layoff notices Monday to 58 workers in anticipation of another shutdown of the federal government, a move union officials criticized as unnecessary.

The Portland Press Herald reported the governor said the layoff notices were issued to comply with the state’s collective bargaining agreement with the Maine State Employees Union, but Ginette Rivard, president of the MSEA, told the paper that union contracts only require 10 or more days notice for layoffs.

The notice comes as the U.S. House voted last week on a budget that would avert a shutdown if it passes the Senate. The New York Times reported that a vote is expected on that budget today in the Senate and that support among Republican senators was growing.
