Sabre Yachts, O'Hara craft big yacht plan

The O’Hara Corp. and Sabre Yachts are pursuing a joint venture to complete and deliver a new line of 70-foot yachts out of a facility in Rockland.

The Bangor Daily News reported that O’Hara has asked city officials for permission to replace a 19,000-square-foot building on its property, where Sabre would complete the final stages of building its new line of boats.

The newspaper reported the Raymond-based Sabre is now designing the 70-foot model that would be built at the Rockland facility of North End Composites, the sister company of Sabre. Since the boats are too large to be hauled by road, they would get finishing touches and would be delivered by sea out of the new building on O’Hara's property.

Steve Hart, O’Hara’s project manager, told the paper that the companies plan to complete four of the larger boats each year. O’Hara is seeking to exempt the project from a flood plain rule that would require a new building to be three feet higher than the existing structure.
