Maine unemployment rate lowest since 2008
Maine’s unemployment rate in April at 5.7% was the lowest it’s been since Sept. 2008, according to a new estimate from the state Department of Labor.
The preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate estimate for April is down from 5.9% in March and 6.8% one year ago, DOL said in a press release today. The state’s unemployment rate continues to hang under the national rate, which was 6.3% in April, a decrease from 6.7% in March and 7.5% last year.
DOL said the employment-to-population ratio remained at 61.8%, the 79th consecutive time Maine’s ratio was above the national average, which was 58.9% in April. It also said preliminary nonfarm payroll jobs was estimated at 605,100 in April, up from 5,600 one year ago.
