Two upscale hotels open in Portland

Two hotels opened in Portland’s Old Port district this week, creating a total of 261 new rooms for business and leisure travelers.

Hyatt Place Portland, at 443 Fore St., is the first Hyatt Place location to open in Maine, with a focus on providing “upscale select service” to support “multi-tasking travelers’ 24/7 lifestyle,” according to a press release.The hotel, which officially opened on Tuesday, has 130 “roomy rooms,” with a coffee-to-cocktails bar, breakfast offerings and a 1,050-square-foot, high-tech meeting space. The hotel cost $14 million.

Courtyard by Marriott Portland Downtown/Waterfront, at 321 Commercial St., has a focus on providing guests “flexibility and choice” though “innovative lobby space” and Courtyard’s “latest contemporary room design …  to optimize and elevate their travel experience,” according to a press release. The hotel, which opened today, has 131 rooms, with a bistro, business library sporting several computers and a 1,800-square-feet meeting space. The hotel cost $17.5 million.

The two hotel developments are among the nearly $400 million in public/private investment going toward projects in Portland that are either built or under construction from the last three years, as reported by Mainebiz in April. The city has another $138 million of projects in the planning stage.
