Radio Shack closing 13 Maine stores

Radio Shack is set to close 13 Maine stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.

The stores in Portland, Bangor, Brunswick and other communities were listed among 1,780 locations in the company’s potential store closure list on its website. The stores, which Radio Shack said were marked because of poor performance, are expected to close in three waves, with the final closures slated for the end of March.

Four Maine stores are located inside malls: South Portland’s Maine Mall, the Auburn Mall, the Bangor Mall and Bangor’s Airport Mall. Radio Shack is also closing stores at the Topsham Fair Mall and the Cook’s Corner Shopping Center in Brunswick.

Here are the other Radio Shack stores set to close:

• 43 Wells Plaza, Suite 3, Wells.

•37 Xavier Loop, Suite 2, Augusta.

•52 Western Ave., Suite 2, Augusta.

•55 Colonial Dr. Standish.

•1600 Main St., Oxford.

•264 St. John St., Portland.

•149 Dublin St., Suite 2, Machias.

The Portland Press Herald reported that 12 Maine stores will remain open, including two locations in Portland. An additional four independent stores that sell Radio Shack merchandise also will remain open in Maine.

When Radio Shack announced its bankruptcy filing on Feb. 5, it also said it had reached an agreement to sell as many as 2,400 of its 4,000 stores to General Wireless Inc., which will transform up to 1,750 of them into stores that sell products by wireless carrier Sprint Corp.
