Industry groups back $5M job training proposal

Groups representing Maine’s logging, manufacturing and agricultural sectors are backing a bill that would invest $5 million to create a job training program through private-public partnerships.

The Bangor Daily News reported that LD 1373 is being proposed by House Speaker Mark Eves, D-North Berwick, who called the measure a “down payment on growing the middle class.” Industry groups and employers, including Rumford-based Nichols Brothers Logging, offered their support for the bill on Monday.

The bill would provide $5 million to businesses and industries interested in setting up training programs for “jobs in high-demand fields” in concert with the community colleges. In exchange, the groups would have to match the money with 50% of their own investment and provide a universally recognized degree or certificate for each industry.
