Portland seeks redo on wage boost vote
Portland city councilors are calling for a do-over on their vote to increase the city’s minimum wage after realizing it will inadvertently give a boost to tipped workers.
City Councilor Jill Duson, who supported the increase, said she expects the city council will revisit Monday’s vote on July 20, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The city council voted 6-3 on Monday to increase Portland’s minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, starting next year, with annual increases to follow. At the time, Mayor Michael Brennan and the councilors supporting the increase didn’t realize it would also increase the base pay of tipped workers, from $3.75 an hour to $6.35.
Steven DiMillo, owner of DiMillo’s On the Water restaurant, told the newspaper that he estimates the increase for tipped workers would cost him over $60,000 a year.
