Sen. King to host cybersecurity briefing for Maine businesses
What best practices can Maine businesses adopt to protect themselves against cyberattacks? That question will be addressed in a briefing next week by U.S. Sen. Angus King, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
King’s office said Thursday that the cybersecurity briefing will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Texas Instrument’s 52 Jetport Plaza Road facility in South Portland. The briefing is open to all Maine business owners, but King’s office said they must pre-register first by calling 1-800-432-1599 or by visting this web page.
The briefing will be led by DHS Assistant Secretary Jose Perales-Hernandez and DHS Northeast Cybersecurity Advisor Michael Leking, who will also field questions from attendees. Maine State Chamber of Commerce President Dana Connors and King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, will deliver introductory remarks.
King’s office said the senator has repeatedly asked Congress to pass cybersecurity legislation, but that there are still measures businesses can take to protect themselves against cyberattacks without stronger federal rules in place. Citing a recent report by McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, King’s office said cybercrime’s annual cost to the global economy is more than $445 billion, which could be translated into over 200,000 U.S. jobs lost.
