Mt. Abram ski area plans expansion

The Mt. Abram ski area in western Maine plans to add six trails and create a dedicated ski racing area in its largest expansion project since the late 1970s.

David Scanlan told the Portland Press Herald that creating a dedicated ski racing venue is the chief impetus of the expansion project, stating it will “alleviate weekend traffic congestion caused by race training around the main mountain.”

Located in Greenwood, near Bethel, Mt. Abram was founded in 1960 and has a vertical drop of 1,150 feet and 51 trails.

The $150,000 expansion is part of a multi-year plan to improve the ski area, Scanlan told the newspaper. Last year the ski area spent more than $1 million to expand its snowmaking systems and in 2013 it received a $235,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to install solar panels that would offset 70% of the ski area’s electricity usage.
