Newsworthy people and performances

New hires

Skelton Taintor & Abbott, a law firm in Auburn, hired Ted Small as a shareholder. Small's practice will include complex commercial and business litigation and arbitration; construction law; real estate litigation; and municipal and government law.

Waynflete, a private school in Portland, hired Sarah Plimpton as director of development. Plimpton was previously a vice president at CCS, a fundraising consulting firm.

Maine Savings, a credit union in Hampden, hired Marcel Blais as its chief retail officer. Blais was most recently senior vice president and chief operations officer of the Community Banking Division at Northeast Bank.

Care & Comfort, a provider of home health services and mental health care in Waterville, hired Michael Stair as chief operating officer. Previously, Stair was with Seniors Plus/Elder Independence of Maine.

Spurwink, a nonprofit in Portland that provides behavioral health and educational services for children, adolescents, adults and families, hired Kristen Farnham as vice president of development and Karen Backman as director of professional development.

Penobscot Community Health Care in Bangor hired Lisa Bergmark as a physician assistant at its Brewer School Based Health Centers located at the Brewer High School and the Brewer Community School.

Kennebec Savings Bank hired Russ Donahue as marketing director and communications officer and Julie Armstrong as an assistant vice president and branch manager in Farmingdale.

Sterling Rope Co. Inc. in Biddeford hired Catherine Shaps as planner and inventory control manager, Steven Rodriguez as a customer service representative, Chuck Weber as a process engineer and Sara Fleetwood as a product development engineer in the research and development department. Shaps was previously a purchaser and inventory specialist at Plow & Hearth, Rodriguez was an associate with Eastern Mountain Sports, Weber was with PMI and New England Ropes while Fleetwood is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech.

The State of Maine Department of Corrections hired Randall Liberty as warden of the Maine State Prison. Liberty was previously sheriff of Kennebec County overseeing the operations of the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.

The city of Portland hired Art Howe as housing safety administrator overseeing the city's new Housing Safety Office. Howe was president of Howe Safety Services.

University College, an administrative unit of the University of Maine at Augusta, hired Mark Tardif as director of communication, marketing and production services. Tardif was previously associate director of media relations at Unity College.

The Ellsworth American and Mount Desert Islander weekly newspapers hired Scott Kimball as advertising director. Kimball was previously with Dead River Co.

The Portland Chapter of SCORE, a business resource and mentoring organization, hired Marge Barker as a certified SCORE volunteer mentor.

PeoplesChoice Credit Union in Saco hired Jessica Pulk as collections- and asset-management manager. She was previously a repossession and liquidation specialist with TD Bank in Falmouth.

Promotions

The VIA Agency, a marketing, advertising and digital agency in Portland, promoted Leeann Leahy to CEO. Leahy, who was president, succeeds John Coleman, who has served as CEO since founding the agency in 1993. Coleman will assume the role of chairman of the firm.

Baker Newman Noyes, an accounting and consulting firm in Portland, announced the election of Carl Chatto to managing principal effective Jan. 1, 2016, and announced the election of Jeffrey Wheeler to succeed Chatto as director of audit, also effective Jan. 1. Chatto is currently a principal and director of audit while Wheeler is audit principal in the firm's Manchester office.

Sterling Rope Co. Inc. in Biddeford promoted Mike Knox to purchaser, Dave Werdelin to arbor sales in the work division, Austin Smith to climbing and outdoor sales and Karen Trunzo to assistant production manager.

The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program promoted Michele Prince to COO. Prince was previously the organization's community initiatives director.

Katahdin Trust in Houlton promoted Aaron Cannan to senior vice president, commercial services officer. Cannan was previously vice president, commercial services officer.

Bangor Area Homeless Shelter promoted Rowena Griffin to executive director, effective Jan. 1, 2016. Griffin was the organization's program manager.

CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange in Portland promoted Maritheresa Frain to executive vice president of study abroad. Frain was previously vice president of academic affairs.

The Maine Municipal Association in Augusta promoted Stephen Gove to executive director. Gove previously served as deputy executive director and director of the Maine Municipal Employees Health Trust insurance division.

Appointments

United Way of Eastern Maine in Bangor announced Elizabeth Sutherland and Ric Tyler were appointed as 2015 campaign co-chairs. Sutherland is a principal at Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications Tyler is a media professional with Blueberry Broadcasting.

Avesta Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing provider in Portland, added Carol Fortier and Jonathan Culley to its board of directors. Fortier is a community advocate while Culley is with Redfern Properties in Portland.

United Way of Androscoggin County in Lewiston announced Agustin Mojica, Norm Beauparlant and Denis D'Auteuil joined its board of directors. Mojica is with Procter & Gamble - Tambrands, Beauparlant with the city of Lewiston and D'Auteuil with the city of Auburn.

The Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor added Abbe Levin, Margo Lukens, Patti Selig and Chris Sockalexis as trustees to its board of directors. Levin is a cultural development consultant and has served as the cultural tourism coordinator for the Maine Office of Tourism, Lukens is a professor in the University of Maine Department of English and serves as chair of the Department of New Media and director of academic programs in Innovation Engineering, Selig is owner of the Cranberry Hill Inn in Southwest Harbor and Sockalexis is the tribal historic preservation officer for the Penobscot Nation.

Achievements

The New York Academy of Medicine awarded the 2015 Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize, recognizing the contributions of physicians and scientists working on the challenges of glaucoma, to Krishnakumar Kizhatil, an associate research scientist at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.

Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry, a law firm in Portland, announced that attorneys Deborah Mann and Natalie Burns were selected by their peers for inclusion in the 2016 edition of Best Lawyers in America as “Lawyers of the Year.” The firm had a total of 15 attorneys recognized as Best Lawyers in the annual publication.

Maine Maritime Museum in Bath presented its 2015 Mariners Award to the Maine Pilotage Commission and the Port of Portland Board of Harbor Commissioners. The award is presented to an individual or organization that has made contributions to Maine's maritime heritage and impacted the state's culture and economy.

Eaton Peabody, a law firm in Bangor, announced that attorneys Edward Feibel and Andrew Hamilton were selected by their peers for inclusion in the 2016 edition of Best Lawyers in America as “Lawyers of the Year.” The firm had a total of 15 attorneys recognized in the annual publication.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection announced that the Presque Isle Landfill Design/Build Project won the 2015 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Public Sector. CES Inc., a firm of engineers, environmental scientists and professional surveyors in Brewer, is the city's environmental and engineering consultant for the project.

The University of Maine at Farmington was recognized as the top Maine college in Washington Monthly's “2015 Best Bang for the Buck” rankings. The college was listed No. 14 in “The Other College Guide: A Roadmap for the Right School for You.”

Baker Newman Noyes, an accounting and consulting firm in Portland, was listed No. 105 in the nation by INSIDE Public Accounting for 2015 for firms that range in size from $15 million to $32.4 million and from 58 to 235 staff.

Franklin Community Health Network Spirit Committee announced its quarterly EPIC award recipients were Greg Thompson, surgical practices manager; Suzanne O'Brien, laboratory director; Deb Brinkman, maternal and child health unit; and Erica Rollins, radiology.

Nancy Walters, a nurse on the medical-surgical unit at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, had an article published in September issue of the American Journal of Nursing. The article titled “Coming Home to Nursing” reflects upon nursing in a small rural area.

CES Inc., a firm of engineers, environmental scientists and professional surveyors in Brewer, was named one of the Zweig Group's 2015 Best Firms to Work For. The award recognizes the top structural engineering, civil engineering, environmental, architecture and multidiscipline firms in the United States and Canada based on workplace practices, employee benefits, employee retention rates and more.

Avesta Housing, a nonprofit affordable housing provider in Portland, presented its annual Core Value Awards. Winners included Greg Payne, development officer, Humanity Award; Todd Rothstein, director of construction services, Stewardship Award; Emily Kosnow, property rehabilitation manager, Relationships Award; and Dennis Burnham, facilities manager, Quality Award. In addition, the firm presented its 2014 Property of the Year Award to Park Street School, located at 14 Park St. in Kennebunk.

Becker's Hospital Review named Waldo County Healthcare in Belfast, Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor and Millinocket Regional Hospital to its List of 50 Critical Access Hospitals to Know.

Maine Medical Partners, the physician practice for Maine Medical Center in Portland, announced that it earned the 2014 UnitedHealthcare PATH Excellence in Patient Service Award for improving service to Medicare Advantage members.

ReVision Energy in Portland earned B Corporation Certification, an official acknowledgement of the company's commitment to creating positive social change, as well as its commitment to transparency and accountability to its broad community of stakeholders.
