Maine Energy Performance Solutions says it recently installed the largest privately owned solar facility in the state for Presque Isle-based Smith's Farm.

The 720 solar panel system at the farm’s cooling and packing facility in Westfield is expected to produce 310,000 kilowatt hours per year. Electricity produced will feed directly into the facility. Excess could be used to offset other accounts owned by the farm.

The sixth-generation northern Maine farm is the largest producer of broccoli and cauliflower in the Northeast, marketing its products under the Stag Brand. The farm, with additional broccoli fields in northeast Florida and California, also grows potatoes, wheat and barley.
