TD Bank helps Nature Conservancy buy 12,700 acres of forest
The Nature Conservancy in Maine has purchased more than 12,700 acres of forest land located next to the Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Milford with the help of a grant from TD Bank.
The property connects the the Sunkhaze Meadows with 9,277 acres of state preservation lands, called the Bradley unit, creating a nearly 35,000-acre area in conservation, the land conservation group said Friday.
The Nature Conservancy had held an easement on the Bradley-Sunkhaze Preserve since 2007, but the funding provided, in part through the TD Forests program, allowed the group to purchase the ownership of the property.
Tom Rumpf, acting director for The Nature Conservancy’s Maine chapter, told the Bangor Daily News that the grant from TD Bank was in the “mid-six-figure range,” but he didn’t provide the total cost of the land purchase.
“This is a great addition to Maine’s conserved forest lands, particularly given its close proximity to the Bangor area,” Rumpf said in a statement. “We greatly appreciate TD Bank’s support on this project and their commitment to protecting places like this.”
The group plans to make the Bradley-Sunkhaze Preserve even more accessible through the development of hiking trails and small parking areas at the new trailheads, the group said.
The land was chosen as a funding recipient this year by the TD Forests program because the land is a valued and accessible area for outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing, hiking and snowmobiling east of Bangor, the group said.
