Federal agency says BIW’s destroyer data is unreliable
A Pentagon agency says that it can’t rely on Bath Iron Works’ cost and schedule projections for its $22 billion program to build three Zumwalt-class destroyers.
Bloomberg reported that Defense Contract Management Agency, the Pentagon agency that oversees contracts, wrote in an assessment that it has no confidence in the data because BIW hasn’t shown that it’s remedied 56 serious deficiencies the agency first cited in 2011.
The agency’s spokesman told Bloomberg that the it considers data produced by BIW “unreliable and inaccurate.” The Navy and BIW have said that most of the issues have been resolved, but the agency hasn’t received any documentation that flaws have been remedied, the spokesman said.
The Press Herald reported that the assessment comes at a time of increased scrutiny of the Navy’s the Zumwalt-class destroyer program because of cost overruns and delays at BIW in delivering of the first of three ships.
