Company planning natural gas power plant in Rockland now targeting private land
A company looking to build a natural gas-fired power plant in Rockland plans to locate the plant on private property instead of land owned by the city.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Rockland Energy Center’s plan to build the plant on city land has been opposed by residents, and that city councilors were expecting to vote later this month to cancel the city’s option with the natural gas plant developer.
A spokesman for the company told the BDN that the company has access to private property and plans to proceed early next year with its plan to build the $200 million facility. He declined to reveal the location of the site being considered.
The company had signed an agreement with the city in August to purchase about 18 acres of land near City Hall and the public services garage.
Rockland Energy Center’s proposed power plant would use natural gas to generate electricity to be sold to the grid and steam that could be used by local companies, according to the Bangor Daily News.
