Outdoor retailers in Maine report slower sales due to warm temperatures
Despite the start of winter this week, unusually warm temperatures have slowed business at some outdoor retailers and other companies in Maine that rely on cold weather to sell their products.
At Freeport-based L.L.Bean, sales of heavy winter outerwear have dropped, and other Maine retailers have said that sales of winter coats and boots are down, the Portland Press Herald reported.
But despite the warm weather and lack of snow on the East Coast, L.L.Bean’s iconic boots have remained popular. The paper reported that the retailers has a backlog of more than 50,000 boots.
The store manager at Rockport's Maine Sport Outfitters told WCSH6 that sales of skis and skates and snowshoes have been slow, but bicycle sales have been stronger than usual for this time of year.
Elsewhere in the area, the Camden Snow Bowl’s manager was expecting to not be able to make any snow this week after making it almost non-stop over the weekend, the TV station reported.
