MITC announces International Trade and Investment Award honorees

The Portland-based Maine International Trade Center has announced the winners of the 2016 International Trade and Investment Awards, which will officially be presented on May 26 — Maine International Trade Day.

The award winners are:

  • Exporter of the Year: Kepware Technologies

Kepware Technologies is a Portland-based software development company focused on solutions to assist businesses including manufacturing, natural gas, and utilities companies in more than 100 countries in connecting automation devices and software.

"Kepware has increased revenue by more than 60% since 2012 in large part to strong growth rates in international markets. In 2015, bookings outside of North America accounted for 42% of our total revenue,” Brett Austin, senior vice president at Kepware said in a news release. “We've fueled this growth by investing in both strategic new hires and in the relationships we've built with our international distribution partners.”

  • Service Provider of the Year: Allen Insurance and Financial

The Camden-based, employee-owned Allen Insurance and Financial provides advice, information, and education on all insurance and financial services issues for individuals and businesses.

"It is an honor to be recognized by MITC as Service Provider of the Year. This recognition comes at a special time in our company's history — this is our 150th year in business,” Mike Pierce, the president of Allen Insurance and Financial, said in a statement. “Our success is firmly rooted in the character and strength of the individuals, families and businesses we've had the privilege of working with over the generations.”

  • Innovator of the Year: Mt. Blue Campus

The Farmington-based Mt. Blue Campus, which consists of Mt. Blue High School and Foster Career and Technical Education Center, exposes both local and international students to a variety of subjects and provides faculty opportunities for expanded interdisciplinary instruction. The technical program provides courses in composite manufacturing, biotechnology and robotics.

"Mt. Blue Campus is very honored to receive the 2016 MITC Innovator of the Year award. The need for learning is so important and as educators we must always remain open to new approaches and opportunities,” said Lisa Dalrymple, the director of the international student program for Mt. Blue Campus, in a prepared statement. “The world is shrinking thanks to the growth of technology, and what better way is there for the students of the world to learn about each other than through direct educational contact.

  • Foreign Direct Investor of the Year: Eimskip

Founded in 1914, Eimskipafélag Íslands (The Icelandic Steamship Co.) is the oldest shipping company in Iceland, and offers transportation solutions with its North Atlantic transport system and freight forwarding around the world. In 2013, Eimskip moved its North American headquarters from Norfolk, Va., to Portland. The company set a goal of providing weekly container service by 2020, increasing Portland’s viability as an export and import option for more manufacturers and distributors with business interests in Northern Europe.

Adrian Kendall, honorary consul of the Federal Republic of Germany for Maine and New Hampshire and attorney at Norman Hanson & DeTroy LLC, will receive the President's Award. Former MITC intern Joe Long will receive the Future Global Leader Award in recognition of his term as a research assistant.
