Portland’s smallest brewery to open this summer

Another brewery can be added to the growing list of beer entrepreneurs in Portland, as three University of Southern Maine graduates will be opening the city’s smallest brewery in a 500-square-foot shed in the popular East Bayside neighborhood this summer.

Lucas Marks, Brett Barrett and Charlie Partridge first started brewing homemade ales at an apartment they shared on Anderson Street and the same homespun quality will be carried over to One Eye Open Brewing Co.

“We have cobbled together our pennies and are doing it piecemeal. We are not buying top-of-the-line equipment,” Marks told the Bangor Daily News about the business venture.

The DIY brewer wasn’t exaggerating when he says the brewery wouldn’t be outfitted with the latest beer tech — the brew system consists of upcycled stainless steel olive drums, while the fermenters once served as molasses containers.

“Starting small allows us to hone our craft without the burdens of an upscale brewery,” Marks told the BDN about the purposefully small-scale operation, which will only have the capabilities of brewing a barrel and a half at a time.

The ale-fueled entrepreneurs plan on unveiling their brewery, which will also have its own tasting room and beer garden, to the public in mid-June.
