USDA awards Jackson Labs $5.8M for research

A little over a week after plotting the timetable for its ambitious 140,000-square-foot Ellsworth expansion, Jackson Laboratory has been awarded $5,840,041 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for research support.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the funding awarded to the Bar Harbor-based biomedical research lab includes:

$4,878,587 provided by the National Human Genome Research Institute to support Jackson Laboratory’s Mouse Genome Database. The MGD is a resource that gives researchers greater insight into human biology and disease.
$784,347 provided by the National Cancer Institute for electronic access to mouse tumor data to facilitate cancer biology research.
$177,107 provided by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for post-doctoral training in developmental genetics to facilitate research for mothers and children.

“Jackson Laboratory has consistently been a leader in the field of biomedical research and has made significant breakthroughs in developmental genetics,” Sens. Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This funding will help ensure that Jackson Lab has the resources it needs to improve human health and continue to be at the forefront of genetic research.”
