Proposed Westbrook Wal-Mart faces residential opposition

Not everyone in the city of Westbrook is excited about a proposed 155,000-square-foot Wal-Mart that would anchor a shopping center on the city’s Main Street across from the popular Westbrook Crossing shopping plaza.

The Portland Press Herald spoke to a small coalition of residents who are voicing their objections to the big-box store setting-up shop in the Cumberland County city — low wages, the alleged use of sweatshops and its detrimental effects on local businesses are among their chief objections to the proposed development.

“Wal-Mart is not the type of business we want in our town,” Mia Perron, a resident of Westbrook who plans on presenting the Westbrook Planning Board with a petition voicing resident’s objections, told the Press Herald.
