Freshly baked goods from a fresh business founder

While hundreds of students across Maine are currently celebrating graduation with trepidation at mounds of insurmountable debt, Alison Keane of Brewer has taken the future into her own hands — and with a little help from the city of Brewer’s economic development office, she is now the president and founder of the Logical Sip Cafe & Bakery.

Keane, a recent MBA graduate from the University of Maine, started planning her downtown Brewer business plan a year ago after looking for just the right job to use her degree to its full potential, according to the Bangor Daily News.

“I started applying for jobs, and I wasn’t really finding anything. I got some rejections and I was like, ‘Well, why wait? Why not just go for it?’” Keane told the BDN. “I always knew I wanted to own a small business but never really knew what.”

Although Keane was more confident in her business acumen than in her culinary skills, she told the BDN that D’arcy Main-Boyington and Nicole Gogan of the city of Brewer’s economic development team helped her draft a business plan and find just the right location — at 103 Center St. in Brewer.

Finding the right baker was the next step and Keane found Becky Hayward, a graduate of Eastern Maine Community College’s culinary arts program. Keane first met Hayward after experiencing the baker’s goods at the Brewer-based Whole Grain Bakeshop, according to the BDN.

Now, after only being open since the end of April, customers at the bakery are already claiming favorites, including Hayward’s homemade cinnamon rolls and the “turple,” a turkey-apple panini, according to the BDN.

A grand opening for Logical is tentatively slated for June, which will include special promotions and treats, including a silent auction that will benefit a local charity, according to the BDN.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the address of Logical Sip as 103 Center St. in Bangor, the Center Street address is in Brewer.
