Loss of contract leads to perfumery closing, layoffs
The loss of a contract with the fragrance and cosmetics brand Elizabeth Arden is leading to the expected closure of perfume maker Evergreen Manufacturing in Madawaska and the subsequent loss of 70 jobs in the Aroostook County town.
The Bangor Daily News reports that plant manager Laurie Gagnon wrote in a filing requesting federal work transition aid for Evergreen’s employees that the contract with Miramar, Fla.-based Elizabeth Arden was 95% of the company’s business.
“Their business has been affected greatly by foreign currency rates and increased cosmetics imports,” Gagnon wrote, according to the BDN. “Their new ownership is taking steps to consolidate operations, which means that they will no longer be doing business with Evergreen. When countries like China devalue their currency, it affects all manufacturing in the United States.”
According to the BDN, Evergreen notified employees of the potential for layoffs several months ago, and many employees have found new employment.
Currently, Evergreen plans to close by the end of June.
