Portland raises minimum age to buy tobacco products

The city of Portland became the first community in Maine to raise the legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 years old in a unanimous vote Monday night.

Portland is the latest community to join approximately 135 other towns and cities across the country in increasing the age to buy tobacco products. Last month, California became the first state to make the change, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Although no one spoke in opposition to raising the age, the Press Herald reports that city councilors were given a petition signed by a number of convenience store owners opposing the measure.

The age increase goes into effect in 30 days.
