Cascades Inc., the Quebec-based paper manufacturer of packaging and tissue products made primarily from recycled paper, will be closing a de-inked pulp mill in Auburn on July 15, laying off 45 employees.

"The rapid erosion of the printing and writing paper market, the overall deterioration of market conditions for de-inked pulp and the low potential for integration with other Cascades activities are all factors that have had significant negative consequences for our Auburn plant," Luc Langevin, president and COO of Cascades Specialty Products Group, said in a statement about the closure.

He added, "Despite major efforts to optimize in the past year, the situation at the plant remained extremely difficult. Therefore, we are unfortunately forced to cease operations.”

Specialty products is one of Cascades Inc.’s three major business units.

Production at the Auburn facility will cease on July 8. According to Cascades, the company will evaluate the possibility of relocating those affected by the closure to other plants. The closest facility is in Thompson, Conn.
