UNE among Maine schools named in U.S. News and World Report's 'Regional Universities North'

There’s much for the University of New England to celebrate as the new academic year kicks off. In August the university set a record for its largest undergraduate class, an independent study listed UNE’s economic impact at over $1 billion and now, U.S. News & World Report named the school one of the best universities in Regional Universities North.

The private university placed at No. 80.

U.S. News & World Report uses a number of indicators to determine its annual ratings of the best universities and colleges, including assessment by administrators at peer institutions; retention and graduation rates; faculty resources; financial resources; student selectivity, which considers acceptance rate, admissions test scores and the percentage of freshmen who graduated in the top quarter of their high school class; and alumni giving rates.

“UNE’s rank among the top universities in the northern United States by U.S. News & World Report demonstrates the excellence and dedication of the university’s faculty, the high caliber of students it attracts and the growing recognition of UNE as an upper-tier institution of higher education,” UNE President and 2016 Mainebiz Nonprofit Business Leader of the Year, Danielle Ripich, said in a statement.

UNE also recently made the Princeton Review’s “Best 381 Colleges” list and in July, the university made both Forbes’ list of “America’s Top Colleges for 2016” and Money magazine’s list of the “Best Colleges for Your Money.”

Seven other Maine-based schools made the ranks of the Regional Universities North:

  • Maine Maritime Academy in Castine at No. 5
  • University of Maine in Farmington at No. 7
  • Unity College in Unity at No. 15
  • University of Maine in Fort Kent at No. 23
  • University of Maine in Presque Isle at No. 27
  • St. Joseph’s College in Standish at No. 137
  • University of Maine in Orono at No. 183

The complete list of Maine colleges and universities that made U.S. News & World Report's other rankings are available online.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story didn't contain the complete Maine rankings for Regional Universities North, they have been added.
