Maine Department of Marine Resources issues shellfish recall
A recall notice has been issued for particular mussels and clams by the Maine Department of Marine Resources, after the harvests tested positive for a marine neurotoxin that can cause brain damage.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the recall applies to mussels and mahogany quahogs harvested or wet-stored in the Jonesport area from Sunday, Sept. 25 through Friday, Sept. 30, in addition to clams harvested in the area from Cranberry Point in Corea, to Cow Point in Roque Bluffs from Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Friday, Sept. 30.
Department spokesman Jeff Nichols told the Press Herald that the recall is based on test samples of the mollusks, and that no cases of illness stemming from their consumption have been reported.
