Santo DiPietro, former South Portland mayor and business leader, dies

Santo “Sam” DiPietro, a longtime community leader and business owner in South Portland, died over the weekend.

DiPietro passed away on Sunday, Oct. 9, in South Portland at the age of 81, according to a Portland Press Herald obituary.

DiPietro, who owned and operated the popular South Portland-based DiPietro's market since 1972, also served as a South Portland city councilor for nine years and was a two-time mayor for the city in 1982 and 1983.

DiPietro also served four terms in the Maine State legislature from 1989 to 1996, and co-founded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine in South Portland.
